You naturally want to make an impression if it is the first day of your job. And what you have studied earlier in your school or colleges is not enough for you to prepare practically for this new world. In this corporate world you do not know what you have to face next. You even don’t know how to behave and give the performance in the beginning. Also what are their expectations in the starting? So here are some tips that will keep you set on right track when you are going to face this world:
• You already know that you are facing or entering a totally new world. You’ll have to know about the dynamics of the workplace environment that is bothering you the most. Listen, watch and take in- are the key mantras or the key words that will help you out to know about your work environment. By listening and observing what is going on around you, you will learn more about the work culture of which you are now a part. You will eventually know about the type of people you are going to work with. Keep your head low and absorb before you suggest and learn how the company operates. Also learn what the management expects from their employees.
• Keep yourself away from troubles. Also, try and identify trouble makers. Be careful while listening to others and keep your own counsel. After some time you can handle the trouble but before that just listen without commenting. Also, you must not talk against your management or the boss in front of anyone because conversations can be misquoted.
• In today’s environment office courtesy and etiquette are very important e.g. always switch off the mobile while your boss is talking to you. Because behaving in such manner is always fruitful and you will always be remembered for this. Keep yourself to your work and also don’t spend your coffee break running with your colleagues down. Don’t you dare to spread grapevine or the part of the grapevine in the office. You certainly do not want to begin your career in the office by being called as a gossiper. Always remember that the reputation you gain during these early months will follow you around in the future. And ultimately you will get paid for it.
• Make yourself productive immediately in the time of need. Set goals for yourself and try and stick to them. Do not get into competition with your colleagues and most of all do not boast about yourself.
• Always acknowledge your mistakes. Do not try to be the ‘know all’. And if your boss asks about something you don’t know, say you don’t know but tell him that you will gather all the information and get back to him.
