There's the need and cry all over the world from ecologists to grow more and more trees if the world has to be saved from catastrophic effects of global warming. By looking after the environment and saving the trees, we help ere for ourselves
A revolution has started in India including farmers, wood-based industries, banking and financial institutions, non-govern-mental organizations and experts in achieving the target of bringing one-third of the national area under tree cover. A large number of countries were reversing the longstanding trend towards destruction of their forests. This is the first time we have documented that many countries have turned the comer, that gradually forests are coming back.
This has enlighten a ray of hope at a time of ominous environmental warnings about global warming caused by man-made emissions of greenhouse or heat trapping gases as forests act as pollution sinks, easing emission effects to some degree.
World Bank, the most powerful financial body, had also chipped into extend forest cover by extending the facility of carbon credit financing to encourage people to raise forests on private and community lands. But studies recently have raised doubts if increasing the forest cover is really that effective in fighting global warming or it also has adverse effects in that behalf. Indeed, these studies emphasis extra caution in that behalf.
It found that chopping all the world's trees might cool the planet down. Conversely adding trees might warm the planet up.
The study flies in the face of conventional wisdom. Current theory says that trees through photosynthesis take in carbon dioxide (main warming gas) and replace it with oxygen. This process is particularly important when fuels containing carbon are burnt.
Though these levels are much higher than in normal scenario, ironically it would make for a cooler planet. This is because brighter high altitudes would reflect more sunlight in winter cooling the area by degrees centigrade. The tropics would warm up as they are less cloudy, but overall the planet would remain cooler. On other hand other scientists are suggesting growing trees may be a good idea where man has earlier caused deforestation but one shouldn't try to put forests where it is not naturally supposed to be, saying in grassland or a high-altitude pasture land.
Climate would be affected with changes in land use, the growth of cities, clearing forests for agriculture, and draining of marshes in the next 100 years. The destruction of the forests would make the local climate degrees warmer because trees soaked up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and burning those releases more carbon dioxide which is not good for the environment.
SO GROW MORE TREES FOR MORE HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT
