The Indian way: Indian formal dinners usually combine the western with our traditional pattern of eating. Traditionally, we eat with our fingers even in formal settings. At the same time, we may need a knife and fork to eat cutlets, steaks, salads, etc. moreover, curries, dals and raitas are an integral part of our meals. So, how does one set a table for such a dinner? The western norms are adapted for Indian homes. Remember, positioning of china, cutlery and glasses should facilitate easy access and use. The order of place settings is designed to help diners enjoy the meal, not intimidate them.

Since we eat curries with chapaties and the like, a side plate is a must. This is placed to the left of the dinner plate. Again, remember the alignment. Also, remember the dinner plate stays in the middle of the mat; do not push it to the right to accommodate the side plate.

Since we eat with our fingers, it is best to locate glasses to the left of the dinner plate so that we don’t end up soiling up.

Bowls: On large for the main curry and the smaller one for the raitas, if any, are logically placed to the right of the dinner plate.

Unlike western meals where many sets of forks and knives are required, one knife, one fork and one dinner spoon are enough for the Indian meal.

Other important things:
• The middle of the table should be left free to place the serving dishes. Ensure that the entire required cutlery for serving the food is already on the table before the dinner starts.

• Do not forget to keep the salt and pepper and other condiments required for the meal.

• And finally, good presentation doesn’t have to be time consuming or expensive. Your own personal, simple, creative touches can differentiate your table from the usual boring table settings around town. Some tips for your creativity: experiment with bright table runners for a really exotic splash of color. Combine with matching napkins, simple plain white china and bright serving dishes to set it off beautifully. A centerpiece can add focus to the table. A few flowers can also be used, but keep in mind that the tall ones can obstruct the view of the guests across the table.

And for making it a romantic dinner with your partner, you can add the candles and that also the scented ones which will add the fragrance.
