EMOTIONAL CHANGES CONTINUE
Try to rest whenever the baby sleeps. Lie down or use relaxation and meditation techniques at least once a day. Do not be afraid to ask for help from members of your family your partner, if they are not too busy.
Tears are very common, especially during the first week. You will probably find that the slightest thing sets you off, yet the tears go as quickly as they come. Sometimes just having the shoulder of a supportive partner, mother or friend is all that is required to make you feel better. Talk to your doctor to rule out the possibility of postnatal depression.
Finding time for yourself is important and perhaps one of the most difficult things to achieve. You may find that you feel selfish and guilty yet desperately in need of some time alone or away from the baby. Having 30-40 minutes to you will be beneficial to everyone. Bach Flower Remedies can help restore harmony to your emotions and, in turn, physical wellbeing.
AFTER THE CAESAREAN BIRTHS
Caesarean births present their own pains and complications. You will feel sore and bruised, and very unenthusiastic about pulling yourself out of bed, but you must do so as soon as you can. You might have excessive bleeding but it is common as the blood sometimes pool in the pelvic area during the Caesarean. Massage the scar area, but not over the stitches until completely healed. Many stitches are dissolvable, but others may need to be removed by your midwife or doctor. Check which type you have before leaving hospital. In a Caesarean birth the body takes longer to heal than with a natural delivery and you should avoid any heavy lifting or strenuous work for six weeks.
AFTER THE EPISIOTOMY
If you had an episiotomy or suffered a tear during the birth, you are bound to feel sore, especially around your stitches. Try to keep pressure off the area.
THE POST NATAL PROBLEMS
Aches and sensations are normal scenario because your body has gone through so much. Follow the measures to make you feel better in the short term and speed up the healing process.
1. Bruising: Arnica, most effective for bruising, can be taken in homeopathic tablet form during labour or after birth. It also comes in the cream form and can be applied externally. Soak in warm, salted baths or baths with a few drops of lavender chamomile essential oils. Apply cold compresses to reduce heat and swelling.
2. Hemorrhoids: It occurs when the blood vessels rupture during labour. For many women, constipation becomes a problem after birth, which can add to the likelihood of hemorrhoids developing through straining too hard during bowel movements. A diet that is high in fibre will help, as will massaging the abdomen with rosemary essential oil blended with a base oil will also help in curing the problem. Ask your doctor before self medicating.
