Even if you are tempted with the chips, don’t forget the serving deception theory and opt for they the smallest packs available. In the sauces and flavorings section, grab of eggless lite mayonnaise. Go for balsamic vinegar because it adds so many flavors to pasta, salad, Chinese and even sandwiches, and limits the need of fattening mayo. Pick Coke only if you can’t really do without it and not taking it means lot of argument in the family. Balance the baddie with Slim Curd, and some toned milk. You can have some conditions for consuming coke; one has to have curd in the day. Juices are though better option and still there is nothing like fresh juice.
There are many new energy drinks like Power Horse that have crowded supermarket shelves. They are very high in caffeine and sodium. Consuming such drinks may be ok once in a while but they are not a good idea for people with hypertension and heart conditions. Any kind of candy is not good for the kids. Going near this counter is like the war zone where the kids always seem to win. Now days there are candies introduced by Sandoz which have calcium content in them. Some chocolates are good for the health like of Lindt that offered 75 percent heart healthy, dark, unsweetened chocolate. With pre-divided portions and only 35 calories per square, it made a guilt-free thrice-a -week indulgence, for the kids and adults.
Get plenty of fruit and veggies for a healthy heart. Carrot, potato, capsicum, lettuce and tomatoes are good. Palak, methi and other green vegetables are great as long as they are fresh. Preserved or canned vegetables are not very healthy as they contain preservatives which may not suit some bodies in some conditions. Ensure that salad is a part of the dinner menu daily. Make use of the veggie and fruit counter as an educational tool to involve her children in the buying process and make it interesting. Give them the task of picking up vegetables starting with the alphabets S, P, and B. It will help in picking up spinach, peas, parwal, brinjal, besides capsicum (red, yellow, green), French beans and American corn kernels. Bitter gourd will also find a place in the list.
Don’t go for readymade sprouts as the homemade ones are more hygienic.
Cakes and most of the bakery items are devils in disguise. On the other hand, use healthy sweet options that don’t involve sugar, milk, chocolate and cream. Assorted dry fruit like dates, apricots, raisins, cashews, walnuts, and chironji (caraway seed) are great energy boosters.
A practical way to make kids getting into healthy eating and shopping is to involve them in the decision-making, so that s/he knows what’s good and why.
