Are you always left behind with your chores? It is not that you are getting less time; it is just that you need to organize your time more efficiently. Don’t get shocked or curse me for telling you to do the things that can wait and then do the urgent ones and then telling you that it will help.
Think it in this way that you’ve got to take care of the urgent things which will get done anyway. It is only those things that lingers on which can wait and sometimes aggravate your indecision and hold up your work. So do those first. When you know there are urgent duties awaiting you, the minor ones will get done faster. Otherwise, they take too much of your valuable time.
According to the Parkinson’s Law, “Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.” If you were doing only minor chores without the urgent ones there waiting to be done, you’d take that much more time to do the minor ones. More time would be available for their completion.
Another essential is to endeavor to make routine chores. Try putting things in the same place all the time. Make it a habit, and you will save hours because you won’t have to search for things too often. An excellent time-saving habit to get into is to start things on time. The television industry, where time is of utmost importance, has been using this idea since its inception when most shows were live shows. They always leave a ‘cushion’ of time for every program. This is to allow for any accidents, or for any part of a show that takes a little longer than originally planned. Give yourself a ‘cushion’ whenever you have a chore to do. If you think it will take an hour, allow yourself one hour and fifteen minutes, at least. Then if the chore really takes only an hour, you can start your next one earlier, and have your ‘cushion’ at the beginning of the next job. Plan your schedule with ‘cushions’ of time and you will never have to suffer that breathless, rushed feeling.
Stop restricting yourself to exact amounts of time. Start off in the morning by getting up a few minutes earlier, and that breathless rush to the office can turn into a more leisurely pace.
Utilize all the time you have up until bedtime. Whether it is work, hobbies, recreation or what have you. If you find yourself waiting for bedtime, or thinking about going to sleep, you are just wasting time. Just plan and organize your time to meet the requirements of any given activity, and that will solve most of your trouble.
Don’t waste too much time worrying or fretting about past mistakes. Once you have made a decision, forget it. Start each day afresh. Don’t let yesterday use up too much of today. Use today’s allotment of time for today or for planning for tomorrow as yesterday can’t b changed at all.
