Such a hectic lifestyle where one works continuously to be ahead in life's race and party hard on weekends could be quite harm to your body. Gone are the days where one had a decent job or other career option earned his living and ate home cooked food cooked by mummy dear of the wife. With changing economic statuses, lifestyles and dietary habits too have undergone drastic makeovers. Today, people are subsisting on fast food or simply microwaving ready-to-eat stuff over home cooked food. Most lifestyle diseases that are what they are called as they develop because of the lifestyles and the common ones are brain attack or stroke, heart diseases, diabetes, obesity and prostate cancer. All these diseases are preventable with a little change in eating, drinking, sleeping and working habits.
OBESITY Obesity is defined as excess body fat. The primary cause of obesity is overeating which is when food intake exceeds energy expenditure. Additionally, some people ore genetically predisposed towards weight gain. Eating disorders or thyroid illnesses and stress may also lead to obesity. The most effective way of fighting obesity is vigorous exercise and an energy-limited diet. In fact, studies have shown that a loss of as little as 5 per cent of the body mass con create enormous health benefits.
BRAIN ATTACK You may be at a higher risk of stroke if there is family history of diabetes, heart disorders or high blood pressure. And since most of these problems can also be environment induced, high levels of stress and hypertension can become leading causes of stroke. Genetic as well as environmental factors both influence one’s probability to a stroke. It is, therefore, advised that one have a healthy, fit lifestyle. Smoking and alcohol should be avoided. Strokes can be caused either because of an interruption in the blood now due to a clot in the body that may lead to the block-age of an artery or due to excessive bleeding in some parts of the brain that may decrease the supply of blood to other parts. Besides leading to death, a stroke can also cause disabilities like paralysis or impairment of one or more senses. Though advanced technology now makes it possible to treat a patient having a brain attack, it is imperative that the treatment begins soon after the attack. Sudden numbness of the face, arm or leg, sudden confusion or trouble in speech or sight, loss of balance and coordination or severe headache is some of the symptoms. The factors that lead to a stroke are mainly lifestyle induced. An unhealthy diet leads to numerous problems like high blood pressure, obesity and heart disorder. Abstinence from alcohol and smoking, avoidance of foods with a high content of fat and cholesterol since these accumulate in the blood vessels and create dots, and regular exercise and reduction of obesity. This not only keeps you fit but also decreases hypertension and stress.
