Indian tourism industry has grown remarkably and still is on the higher curve. With so many opportunities in the sector, it is surely driven by a huge surge in both business and leisure travel by domestic and foreign tourists. India is one of the hot destinations for the global tourists and thus has a direct impact on the hospitality sector with an increase in the occupancy ratios and average room rates. The day is not far off with the present trends that the hospitality industry will be the most sought after for employment.
The government is making tremendous effort in the areas of investment and infrastructure with an overall aim to boost the tourism industry. At the present growth rate, the sector is very healthy and the boom will surely continue. The industry is growing at a very rapid pace and there is a demand for more rooms both in metros and smaller towns. Hospitality industry is intricately linked to the tourism industry and the growth in the Indian tourism industry has fuelled the growth of the Indian hotel industry. The current growth of the hospitality industry has been driven by three main factors:
1. Mobility of the middle-class segment in India is growing and Indians are becoming more mobile within and outside the country.
2. India has become the IT centre of Asia bringing in more investment.
3. The success of successful global advertising campaign, ‘Incredible India’.
The immense growth in the hospitality industry will cross leaps and bounds in the near future. There are more opportunities in this sector and all the credit goes to the growing tourism industry.
With the industry growing, the employment opportunities in this sector will also grow in abundance. Indians have exciting management career opportunities in the booming field of international hospitality. It is very clear that well educated hospitality managers with an international perspective and professional experience will be in high demand. As more international hospitality companies make their presence felt in India, there is a keen interest and need to set up development teams that conduct feasibility studies, identify suitable sites and partner with developers that can build hotels and mixed-use development projects. Due to the immense demand of talented people, the hospitality sector offers great careers in top-notch hotels, and other segments like civil aviation, hotels, tour operating companies, travel agencies, chefs, etc.
While there is a significant support in terms of hotel management schools, our biggest challenge continues to remain an acute shortage of skilled people. In our present scenario, our focus is to internally identify our key performers and map out a career path for them. This rapid growth in tourism and hotel industry has left a wide gap in getting skilled manpower that is needed to run the industry. The future of the industry will remain with companies who are able to look after the welfare of their employees and who will invest in training. The industry will most certainly become competitive in terms of hotel room rates which are at some of the highest levels of anywhere in the world.
