Encashing On IPL Rated by 1 users
By: Payal Jain, In SportsHits - Today: 99, This Week: 0, Month: 0, Total: 0Updated: Thursday, May 08, 2008 Polities, as we know, rarely takes a vacation but the distractions provided by the highly successful IPL series, the cheer leaders controversy successfully resolved by a change of attire, the disgraceful episode involving Harbhajan Singh and a weeping Sreeshanth, the changes in the ICC board and a end of the Colonial era in cricket keep our attention and even the exit of KPS Gill from the IHF is largely ignored by the limited response in the media.
IPL has given a new meaning to cricket and is a game of the future and we in India have had the good fortune to see the World’s best talent performing at several cities in the country and the motivation this will provide great opportunities for the future and we may well see a new generation of record breaking cricketers. But when they will play for their countries they surely will know to crack each other’s weaknesses. It is much talked about that money and power are influencing the sport and they are right as this happens in every field and the task before the new administration in the ICC is to ensure fairness and an end to racial preferences in appointments and decision making.
The IPL fever is catching on as the tournament is innovative and gives a great opportunity for cricketers to earn substantial amounts of money and the viewing public happily provides the resources for this level of excellence. Incidents like Harbhajan Singh slapping and SreeShanth weeping will be condemned by all and deserve to be punished and are a poor example to future generations and the BCCI will have to act firmly as the IPL have done and clearly indicate their displea¬sure on this unacceptable behavior.
It is quite funny that behavior is accepted or unaccepted is the talk of the town because big money is involved. The Harbhajan slap is worth Rs. 3 crores, that’s the price he paid for his anger but Sreeshanth was given just warnings for provoking that behavior. This behavior scenario surely gave a chance to earn some money for the news channels on reports on the behavior in the gentleman’s game. The IPL is definitely playing an important role for giving ideas on the programmes to be run on these 24 X 7 news channels. Recently I was watching one of them which were covering a different angle to the fees paid to these cricketers in the IPL. Like the cricketer who has not played well say has made less runs then his runs are the most costly as per the fees is divided by the runs made.
The brand ambassadors other then the owners of the teams are also charging huge amounts to sign as a brand ambassador. The league trend is new in India and everyone is encashing to it. Be it a slap incidence or Rakhi Sawant commenting on players performance being distracted by the presence of cheer leaders or politicians making it an issue for the coming elections, IPL is surely become a hit.
