In my childhood I remember guests from Mumbai often used to envy the space we had at our place with a garden and a huge terrace in a small town Ambala. The house was a decent huge to accommodate a joint family of four couples and their twelve kids. I remember these people used to call us lucky on enjoying nature while sitting at home. And today after so many years I still hear the same things from the guests in metros while I live in Jammu in a decent house with a very small garden.

In a world where we have become so familiar with those residential towers that vie for space in clogged cityscapes that we often have to sacrifice our dream of a perfect haven. But there are small additions that can spring up, that bring back hope. There are ways to create space in small spaces. Partitions is one of them that ideal solution that create an illusion of space and can help people retreat to privacy.

Partitions today have undergone a massive transition to suit the space requirements of home owners. One can choose from a huge variety of room dividers that can make the room look anything from cozy to elegant to even aesthetically classic. Now, the house owners of small homes or studio apartments need not fret over limited space when unexpected guests land up. Whether you want to divide the kitchen into separate cooking and dining areas, one can interestingly apply partition to the decor of the living room or hide the clutter in the study as both permanent and improvised or flexible room dividers serve as great choice.

Make a partition by simply installing shelves, cupboards, and other furniture that act as improvised room dividers. A low wall can be used to divide either bedrooms or other rooms in the house. Plants like bamboos and other crotons also create great divides. Putting exotic looking rare plants into wooden frames can make a division look eye-catching. Similarly, masks, vases and funky tribal arte facts can make for other divisions.

Panels and screens also work as flexible room dividers. These can be made from oak, lacquer, paper or hand embroidered fabrics and these can be moved into different positions by sliding and folding. Their flexibility helps control space, in die room, while bamboo and paper screens impart a very in-vogue Oriental feel.

Embroidered panels are also great dividers as they bring some antiquity. Embroidered fabrics mounted on screens are also a good idea to match the design of the fabric to the rest of the room’s upholstery. Screens and panels give you a free reign to control light. Curtains are also a flexible room divider. These are easy to install, all you need to do is close or open them for a quick partition.

Glass is also an exotic option. Transparent, yet dividing, glass can be used to create a physical division while maintaining contact between separate halves of the room. These create an illusion of extra space by making rooms appear larger than they are. Lamps are another great option if placed strategically, alone or in combination, they allow light to filter in to each side of the room, creating an impression of division.
