In every organization there is a hierarchy which is sometimes formal and sometimes informal. Trying to jockey for power and trying to find their place within that hierarchy leads to politics, the office politics. And the worst part is that it is inevitable. Backbiting, gossiping, lying to the boss about rivals, dumping one’s workload on to others are all part of the game. Even staying out of office politics itself can often get you in. Office politics also takes great leaps where there is an insecure boss or senior who likes to hog the limelight one who does not realize that developing younger talent is his/her responsibility. People who never compromise on their standards and integrity always win in the end. Some people do not change at all and no matter what happens, so it is best not to fight back or retaliate, and in that case it is best to leave such people behind and move on. It is all about playing your cards right and stay ahead of this game in order to rise in your career. Follow on these simple tips and enjoy the game:

1. Talk Straight: Be honest giving your best at anything you do. People who never compromise on their standards and their integrity always win in the end, and rise naturally above politics and competition. If you have a problem with somebody at work, it is best to discuss the matter openly with the concerned person.

2. Don’t bring salary in the conversation with colleagues: In today’s workplace, there could be steep differences in the salaries of two individuals working at the same level. What you earn is usually based on what you bargained for when you joined, and based on your last salary at your previous job. The best way to get a raise is to work hard and achieve results. Discussing your low salary with others won’t help.

3. Update yourself: It is vital to keep yourself updated on happenings. Unpleasantness can be avoided if you can sense and are aware of situations before they build up. This way, you will be better able to tackle them diplomatically.

4. Avoid unpleasant situations: When you discuss things with somebody, ask yourself if you would say the same things in their presence. Avoid situations that are unpleasant.

5. Be polite: Even if somebody is unkind, you don’t have to retaliate and behave like him or her. You must learn not to react to them and to any adverse situation, because only when you react does it really start to affect you.

6. Respect everyone: Let others feel that you know they are capable people too. This way you make them feel secure, thereby reducing the politics around you. Even as you upgrade your skill-sets and are noticed as a good professional, try to always give your colleagues and subordinates a chance to get into the limelight.

7. Play along with humour: Humour is the best antidote for politics, be it with newspaper cartoons or in an office. Take any criticism as constructive and let it make you think rather than defend yourself. And never lose your cool, especially if you are a senior. This way you will help in keeping the workplace stress-free.
