Environment refers to a slim total of all the conditions and influences that affect the life and development of organisms. Life on the planet earth has been possible only -because of its environment resources like Forest, Water, Mineral, Food, Energy and Land. Environment is a self maintained system and has a capability of maintaining equilibrium unless large scale intensive manipulations aren’t caused to disturb it. The consistent interaction of living beings and especially of human beings with the environment has changed it considerably. Some of the human induced changes have damaged the environment to a great extent.
Industrial growth both in developed and developing countries has given rise to problems of environment pollution including our water, soil, air etc. The earth is a victim of the onslaught of materialistic civilization and industrial revolution. As a consequence there is rapid depletion of natural resources-water, forests and land. To grow a tree will take at least 12 years for it to reach the reasonable height. Forests absorb the rain water, filter it and release it only gradually. This is how rivers flow all the years round.
Growing population is making increasing demands on natural resources resulting in the exploitation of resources in an unsustainable manner. In 1960, the need for increased food production resulted in green revolution which emphasized hybrid varieties, excessive use of fertilizers, insecticides; as a result, it has rendered irrigated land unfit for agriculture. Almost three fourth of the surface of the earth is covered with water but 97 percent of water on earth is in oceans. This water can't be directly used to meet any of our daily needs. Almost 2 percent of the water is stored in ice caps and glaciers and again can’t be used unless melted. That leaves just one percent to meet all the needs of all living beings.
Oceans also need care since we have to depend on them for food as the land has already been over-exploited. Temperature of the sea is directly related to the type of monsoon. As a result of the global warming, melting Himalayan glaciers are threatening to unleash a torrent of floods into the mountain valley. Consequently dependent will dry up. It is believed 70 percent of the water available in the country is polluted and 70 percent of all the diseases are water borne. If the present level of exploitation and misuse of underground water continues future wars between or within the nations will be fought on the issue of water.
Environmental crisis is a spiritual crisis. As long as we seek to address one and not the other, we will not get far. Our industrialized vision has taken away our ability to see the living spirit in the trees in the river in the mountain and to know that the life, energy sustaining them and us is the same. Today we have come to recognize the reality of climate change and the accompanying environmental crisis, but we shy away from addressing the deeper causes. We have lost too much during the last fifty years through deforestation, polluting the water ways, annihilating the species etc. Save the environment before it goes worse.
