Around 8 to 12 percent of all couples face fertility problems. If you are having trouble getting pregnant, you and your husband should get thorough examination. There could be different reasons with different couples. Increase the odds of getting pregnant by the following suggestions which will make you physically more able:
CHECK BODY WEIGHT
Underweight women had as much as a 60 percent higher chance of infertility than those of normal weight, and obese women were three times more likely to be infertile. The reason behind this is that both over and under-weight women may face menstrual and hormonal imbalances leading to decreased chances of getting pregnant. Eat healthy and have some kind of regular exercise schedule.
CUT CAFFEINE
Too much caffeine can interfere with fertility and cause higher rates of miscarriage. Tea, coffee, colas and soft drinks should be limited to one or two cups a day otherwise they could get in the way of successful pregnancy. Alcohol too can cause trouble in conceiving.
STOP SMOKING
Tobacco smoke can impair fertility. The nicotine and other toxins in cigarette smoke interfere with the ability of ovarian cells to make estrogen, and may cause a higher incidence of genetic abnormality in a woman’s eggs and weaken chances of fertilization. In men too, smoking may lead to atherosclerosis, diabetes or hypertension, all of which may impair blood flow and lead to impotence.
DESTRESS
Stress upsets hormonal balance, potentially causing missing or irregular menstruation due to disturbed ovulation. So distress and increase your chances.
DO DISCUSS DRUGS
Some prescription drugs, herbs and over-the-counter products can make it tougher to get pregnant, while others cause foetal abnormalities leading to miscarriage. It is important to discuss with your doctor or fertility specialist all the medicines that you and your husband take.
But don’t take yourself off medication without first speaking to a doctor. It is advisable for both husband and wife to have a drug check too, since many prescription drugs from antibiotics to appetite suppressants and blood pressure medications can cause impotence or affect sperm production.
TRY YOUNG
The best time to have children is between the ages of 20 and 30 when a woman’s fertility is at its highest. As women are born with a finite number of eggs and no new eggs are produced as women age. The best eggs are ovulated early so with age there is a lower chance of conception and higher risk of foetal abnormality and miscarriage as women grow older. It may vary from woman to woman. Not until a woman hits her mid-30s is there a significant drop in fertility, and some women will bear children without difficulty even later. On an average, though, by the time she hits 40, a woman’s chances of getting pregnant are just ten percent of what they were when she was 20. If you are keen to start a family, do it as soon as possible. And it depends upon your priorities in life.
